JBER recreational pass and check-in required.

Need to Know

This trail system is entirely on JBER military land and requires a $10 annual recreation pass permit, which can be purchased online at jber.isportsman.net/. You must also sign in and out as you enter and exit the area. There are times that training exercises are being held, closing the area off, and that is also posted on the website.

Description

There is no official name for the trailhead at the end of Basher Drive, but it is sometimes referred as the Upper Basher Trailhead or the Dome Trailhead. Nevertheless, there is an ample parking lot where Basher Drive ends and Kalmia Drive begins along the metal post fence. Follow the fence west along the border of the JBER boundary, and you'll eventually reach the North Gasline Trail of the Far North Bicentennial trail system.

Following the fence east, the trail will quickly bring you down to the North Fork Campbell Creek. A bridge allows for easy crossing of the creek, and the trail continues upwards through the woods. The trail is pretty mellow through the woods, but as the foliage breaks up, the trail steepens, and you climb the west ridge into the alpine to an apparent high point.

Follow the trail southeast to another bump, and you've reached the top of the Dome. From the top of the Dome, you get a good vantage point of the Anchorage bowl.

This trail has an intermediate rating for its grade.
